LA CHANGA
Sonido La Changa is a prominent sonidero in Mexico City, founded by Ramón Rojo Villa in 1968.
Ramón Rojo, often referred to as “El Rey de Reyes” (The King of Kings) in the sonidero scene, is also frequently nicknamed “La Changa.”
The origins of Sonido La Changa trace back to when Ramón Rojo’s uncles, originally from the Tepito neighborhood, purchased a record store in the Historic Center of Mexico City. They began a collection of vinyl records, including materials from Sonora Matancera.
Rojo began his career as a record player, a person who played music at dances using a turntable, a Radson bulb amplifier, speakers (referred to as “trumpets” in the sound environment), and his modest collection of two records. This marked the beginning of the sound system, a name that gradually became synonymous with turntables.
As a child, Rojo was nicknamed “La Changa” after a character from the radio soap opera Chucho el Roto, popular in the 1960s, of which he was a fan. He subsequently gave this name to his sound system. In the 1970s, along with sonidero Roberto Herrera “El Rolas,” Ramón Rojo pioneered one of the most recognizable features of the sonidero: the interjection of greetings while the music played. For many years, La Changa was a prominent fixture at the Pista Las Rejas in Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl, a legendary sonidero venue.
This year, La Changa signed with one of the most prestigious companies in the USA, GDL Entertainment, LLC, for his USA 2024 tour.
